More about Ninah...
Ms. Kinene’s mother, Betty Kinene, founded Uganda Crafts in the 1980s after losing her crafts kiosk to a man who wanted her job. He confiscated her inventory and locked her out. She was powerless to stop him and the authorities would not help her.
As a disabled widow with several children to support, Betty was desperate. A UNICEF worker learned of her plight and helped Betty to set up Uganda Crafts. Today, Uganda Crafts employs dozens of artisans who make baskets, jewelry and accessories. Their mission is to create jobs that empower disadvantaged people such as widows, orphans and people with HIV or other physical challenges. Uganda Crafts embodies the practices of fair trade by paying fair wages, preserving the environment, training those in need of new skills and preserving cultural traditions.
